  • Blogless

Yep, I've let time fly by, without so much as a peep from me. Life is just going and going. Dh was laid up for about six weeks. Seemed like forever. He was on crutches. You would think that life would be pretty easy, since my sister-in-law moved here from South America about the same time it all happened. She has been taking care of him, cooking, and doing the laundry. Ya see, he was on a beach in California. We were here, starting school. He turned to run away from a wave, and at that moment, tore a leg muscle. Things are almost back to normal, which means that he is gonna throw himself back into flipping houses.

As for school, it is there. I feel like I have stepped away from teaching life skills. I wish I had never gotten the idea to teach Adapted PE. I have no where to do it, and no equipment. At least in the Spring, we know where we will be---at the track. We have mostly been walking, which is good exercise. I seem to teach reading, reading, reading all the time. We concentrate on social skills daily. I am forever telling my kids to quit wiping their noses with their hands, sneezing all over everything, and please go blow your nose. This H1N1 is crazy! We sanitize the room a few days a week. I am sure we probably should be doing it hourly, lol.

Bowling began for Special Olympics. The area games happened, but my two participants were sick. Oh well, we still have the State games to go to. One student got his own bowling ball. The parent and I were probably more excited than he was, lol. With his bone condition, he has never been able to lift heavy things. He was forced to choose a light ball, which is made for young children. His fingers never quite fit, being 15 years old, but he did the best he could. Now he has his own light ball, drilled just for him. He managed to knock over 10 to 15 pins more per game.

    Life goes on...

  • This and That

A new student joined my class today. I was worried how her day would go, once I heard that she was emotionally disturbed. This could be the calm before the storm, but I am staying with positive thoughts on the whole thing. She got along well with my students, was very polite, and enjoyed helping in the cafeteria after lunch. I have a few students working in there, cleaning tables and chairs, and throwing away trash. I called the parents in the afternoon to ask if she could work in the cafeteria, and earn money. I also gave a good report on how her day was. See, when the parents showed up yesterday to enroll her, they thought my room was not restrictive enough. They want her in a behavior program, for those students that act out. We have nothing like that in our district. Time will tell, if she shows her true colors. The parents seem to think that I can't handle her, what would I do, if she needs a moment to pull herself together. Who knows, but I am not going to keep worrying about 'if' and 'when'. After all, Truman was throwing feces around last year, and beating anything and everything he could get his hands on. My bathroom had to be completely put back together, toilet replaced, after his outbursts. I really don't think this child will ever reach to those heights, lol.

On another note, our beloved Cheddar passed away. She was older dd's dwarf hamster. We had her for two years, the lifespan being 2 to 3 years. She had been looking frail for months, losing weight and hair. It was just a matter of time. I feed the hamsters at night time, just before the girls go to bed. We get them out, pet them, fill their bowls, and put them back. Poor little Cheddar was in there, lying on her side, just under the water spout. The girls began to cry. With Dad being out of town, I was on my own to deal with this. I felt so sorry for them. Now they are fast asleep in my bed, taking the whole bed up. Somehow, I will squeeze myself among them, and try to get some sleep. I wrapped Cheddar up real good in plastic bags, and stuck her in the freezer, so that we can have a proper burial when dh returns.

  • Lesson Learned

Even if you haven't seen your student in your classroom, check your bathrooms, before going into panic mode. LOL, I misplace one of my students today. Mind you, this is only the first week of school. Yes, I did survive. I had a margarita to celebrate!

My female student with Down's Syndrome starts her day in another classroom this year. She is taking ProStart--a class that teaches restaurant skills---serving, place setting, menus, etc. Today, she came into that room, got her glasses and left. I was out in the courtyard, monitoring the students, just before the first bell. I didn't see her.

The other teacher texted me about 20 minutes later, asking if I had seen her. I told her no, she hadn't been to my room. So, I start a search, checking every bathroom in the main building. Ten minutes later, the administrators know, and start a search, too. I ask my student in the cafeteria (who is working), if he had seen her yet. He said no, but he said that he saw her in my room before the first bell rang, while he was putting his backpack away. I thought, 'This couldn't be that easy.' I run back to my room, where my students are patiently waiting, working with my assistant. I walk over to the hall, where the bathroom light is on, door open. There she is! Sitting on the toilet, door wide open. She tends to giggle and sing while taking care of this task, but she hadn't uttered a sound for 40 minutes! I hadn't seen her, didn't think to check my bathroom!

I was quite embarrassed to admit that I found her in my bathroom. Oh well, lesson learned. One day I need to write a book about all my teaching antics.

  • School Days, school days...

And the cycle begins again, tomorrow. It is Open House! Since I have no new students, I really don't expect anyone to stop by. Caseload is low, so I will have plenty of time to work on things I need to get done. First thing in the morning, I will be going to see dds' teachers. It is my right as a parent, which overrides my teacher duties. Even though I am supposed to be in my classroom at eight, my assistant will be there instead. I should be back way before nine.

I am looking forward to another good year! One student will be graduating at the end of the school year, and two more will be leaving school, to hopefully join the workforce. I have had two great years--if you don't count Truman---but I didn't have that burden alone. Break a leg---oh, wait---that saying goes for acting. Oh well, should work in this case, too. Have a great year, all you teachers out there!!!

  • Anniversary

Twelve years tomorrow--married---Twenty being together--that is a long time! This is the first year I have actually remembered. Usually dh and I are so busy with school getting started, we forget, lol. Dh wants to go dancing, but I hate the only place we would go. Dinner out would be nice, but he wants to go dancing. I don't know...

  • Last Day!

My last day of freedom! Where will I spend it? In the classroom...ugh! Took a trip to Lubbock yesterday, with two teaching colleagues. Went to this fabulous teacher store--could have spent a mint--but I didn't. Bought a book, for $30, all about teaching PE. Yes, I asked to teach adapted PE. No clue what I am doing, but we will have fun, lol.

Stil have a mess to straighten up in my room, should be done today, if I can get my butt out of bed. Tomorrow begins a new year! The students arrive this time next week...

  • Jigsaw Puzzle

It is amazing how much I have to talk about, when school starts. I haven't had much to say in my blog, since sitting on my butt all summer really doesn't show much excitement. Yes, I can just see my daily entry--Monday, sat on butt all day. Tuesday, sat on my butt all day watching tv. Wednesday, sat on my butt, surfed the net all day. LOL, now that school is gearing up, once again, I am pouring out my woes.

Met with the man that will be in the other room (gotta stop calling it 'my other room', technically it isn't mine anymore. He said that I could leave some equipment over there. I knew he wouldn't mind, he is one cool dude. If I ever had to go to court, he would be the man I would want to see.

Spent a couple of hours moving furniture. Felt like I was trying to put together a giant jigsaw puzzle. I would move a piece, check the fit, and if it didn't feel right, I would move it again, lol. Isn't that what you do with jigsaw puzzles? I managed to get the storage cabinet in a good place, even though it is ugly, and I put a bookcase on top of it. There is ample room to still get the wheelchair through the hallway, to the bathroom. Another bookcase went over by the door, for all the games. I moved my desk under the tv mounted on the wall--for channel one. Hope it plans on staying up there, wouldn't want it to suddenly take a dive right onto my head, lol. Behind me is an upright bookcase. In front of my desk, is the bookcase that has been there for four years. At least nothing will slide off the front of my desk now. Tomorrow, I will spend time putting all my games, books, puzzles, etc, back where they belong. Hauled everything out into various piles, since I couldn't move any piece of furniture without removing some weight from them.

Took the girls to Taco Box today, and invited a couple of teachers to join us. They didn't mind being in the company of my girls. They said they were heading to Lubbock on Monday for the day, to shop at Michael's and a great scrapbooking store. They invited me to come along. I have never been to Lubbock just to go. I have only gone to drop dh off at the airport, or pick him up from the hospital. Lubbock is about a two hour drive, a great place where people go to enjoy the 'big' city life, or to go Christmas shopping. In the twenty-six years I have lived here, I have never done that. We figure that it will be our last hurray, before school starts. Looking forward to fondling some scrapbook supplies!

  • A Royal Mess

Spent 4 hours in my classroom today. After working 2 hours without an air conditioner, the man came and fixed it! I spent the 4 hours reorganzing--trying to make 2 rooms of stuff fit into one room. Now it looks like a cyclone hit my room!

Since my numbers are low this year, and my high maintenance boy aged out of the program, I won't be needing the second room for diaper changes and naps. I also used the room for testing, and my assistant taught a lower group for math. The Judge is gonna move in there with his misfit of kids, that get in trouble for bringing knives to school, etc. Serious offense kids. He runs it like a drill sargent, lol. We get along great, so this is just gonna be a new adventure in teaching. One bathroom will be his, the other will be mine. I get to pick, since one of my students needs a particular bathroom because the assistance bar getting on and off the toilet is on his good side, where he can use his good arm for lifting. Of course, the judge doesn't know this, lol.

Wonder what his students will think, being in a classroom right next to severe and profound students? Will it be a learning experience? Maybe the Judge and I can use this time to experiment. I call him the Judge, because during his off hours, he is a court judge. The students arrive at school at 7am, and go home at noon. They are not allowed to mingle with the other students.

Off to the lake tomorrow--then back to sorting through my stuff, and making my classroom teachable again. Moving my desk to a new location, after 4 years!
  • Signs that summer break is coming to an end...

...the Welcome Back letter from the superintendent comes in the mail.

    ...school supplies are on sale.

...the school supply lists are put out at the local Walmart.

...tax-free day is less than a week away.

...the city is repainting the school crosswalks.

...alot more cars are sitting at the various schools.

...when your child gets a Welcome to... letter in the mail from their new teacher.

    Argh--where did it all go????

I have really enjoyed my time off. Starting the summer with the trip to Kansas for a scrapbooking retreat, was just fabulous. I didn't care if I went anywhere else, lol. Yes, I am addicted to Sims 3--this is what I spent the rest of my summer doing. Just the opportunity to be lazy, was a treat! Revived and ready to hit the trenches, again! Ask me in a week how I feel about it, lol.

  • Reading Time

I admit, I haven't set a very good example this summer. All I have read recently, are scrapbooking magazines. I have spent most of the summer surfing the net. The girls haven't read much either. I signed them up for the summer reading program at the library, but they went only one time. They just weren't interested, and I didn't push it. After all, it is summer time. They have also spent their summer surfing the net. They have their own computer.

Older dd said that she was bored this summer, because we didn't go any where. I didn't mind doing nothing all summer. This has probably been the laziest summer I have ever had. Trying to encourage little dd to read. It isn't that she doesn't want to, she just isn't making time. She is so much like me, lol. So weird! So, today, I went and picked up a book for her to read independently, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid. I also picked up Ralph S. Mouse--the sequel to Mouse And The Motorcycle. Each night we are going to read together. She reads and chapter, and I read a chapter. We should finish the book by next week.

Summer is officially over. I spent some time at school today, and plan to go back every day this week, except Wednesday. We head to Bottomless Lakes again, for one last dip before school starts.
